What tryouts are for
Tryouts are intended to help form teams that compete at the appropriate level of competition, while making sure each roster is balanced by position.
Travel teams play at one of three levels of competition — A, B, and C. Tryouts are how the league decides which level is the right fit for each player.
How players are evaluated
Tryouts are run by the league's Travel Directors. Official evaluations are reviewed by independent evaluators with no affiliation to the age group being evaluated.
Evaluators grade players on key basketball functions, including but not limited to:
- Dribbling
- Passing
- Shooting
- Defense
- Game IQ
- Teamwork
- Sportsmanship
How tryouts work
- Register for the season first. Tryouts are for placement, not for entry.
- There are two sessions for each grade and gender. Attend both if you can — at least one is required to be considered for placement.
- Each group's two sessions fall on different weekdays, so one standing weeknight conflict doesn't rule a player out.
- Wear sneakers and bring water. Players run drills and play in live game situations.
- The number of teams formed each year depends on interest, the overall ability of the age group, available gym space, and how many parents volunteer to coach.
- Results are sent by email. Families of players who make a team get a separate travel registration link.
- Not making a team in one year says nothing about the next. Every player still has a spot in intramural.
